Abilities

I remember when in junior classes we used to have this ‘dictation tests’ in the English period. And for that we had to learn the ‘spellings’ of the ‘difficult’ words from the prescribed chapters of the text books.

Also while reading story books like ‘Noddy’ and then going forward novels like ‘famous five’,’nancy drew’ and ‘tom sawyer’ parents used to tell me to mark / note down the words, I’d read for the first time or didn’t know the meaning or which had a long spelling or all of the above, and then look into the dictionary for the meaning and memorize it for using it in future while talking-the whole idea was to improve on the word power and language ability.

Honestly,I used to detest those tests and the ‘hard work’ that was put into the preparation. Though my parents always tried to explain how important and useful it for me to know the ‘big’ words that appear in the text books every now and then. Still..I didn’t like ‘dictations’.

How important those ‘dictation’ tests were is known only when you grow up. Go to higher classes and be amongst the very few who can spell the ‘difficult’ sounding words flawlessly and with no efforts.

I’m not sure if these days schools have the same routine of conducting dictation tests any more for the junior classes…But now when I come across kids who don’t know and pretty much don’t care about their spelling ability and remembering the words and their meanings as well…I feel upset. I feel the so called ‘orthodox’ way of teaching that we had was much better than these days flashy ways of schools and their so-called apt syllabi.

The root causes could be plethora..to start with a simple one-even the little kids who have just started talking few sounds and tiny words say YA or a YEP instead of a YES.

Yes,slang. Slang is in and that’s how the little ones are picking up. and if we will have to list few more reasons then this is not the post for it…I’ll have to write another one for that !

The whole point here is I think we didn’t go to any fancy named schools-but typically ‘St.Franics’ or ‘St.Dominics’ or even ‘Spring Dales’ or ‘Holy Cross’-but we did learn what was required for us to learn at that age and it’s paying off till now.

No wonder they say “OLD IS GOLD”..not that I’m not against all the new stuff that has been included in the schools now or the new methods of teaching…..just that I wonder if they are sufficing the requirements of the ‘necessary’ education that a child needs at the right time ?

P.S. On a very very different note here…I was just wondering who started this ‘claiming’ the first position race on the blog ? Any one knows who is the ONE ? 😀

    1. I totally agree with the spellings and the slangs…even now, I’ve difficulty in typing “u” (YOU), “r” (ARE), “v” (WE) things like that. Its difficult for me to change, after learning it the proper way.

But my Sh – has replies like Duh (yes) – I dont if its difficult to say yes or is it hep to say Duh !!! 😉

Of course, necessary education in the proper method is very essential…once the basics are in place, then later they can change it how ever they want. 🙂

Of course, my daughters have dictation tests…spelling bee tests….and still she consults with me everytime she writes “acknowledgement” !!! LOL !!!! 🙂

        1. LOL @ spelling problems and change in the header 😀

Areh how come you all are noticing the header today ??? It’s been up since many days now !

Duh is a very common reply these days…heheh sometimes even I use that 😉

  1. Argh bad spellings!!! They get me so annoyed!!! I loved dictations (yes, read: nerd) since English was always my favourite subject. And I’m really happy we were taught English the way we were…spellings, grammar, everything. Hence today, my spelling and grammar is even better than my Australian friends because they weren’t taught the same way. Don’t know about kids in India these days but I can tell you that kids here still don’t know how to spell. We not only learnt how to spell but also how to figure out spellings for new difficult words or sound out new difficult words.

By the way, I’m with T…love the header. Is it Marine Drive? Sure reminds me of it…

    1. you girls noticed the header now ??? It’s been up since almost 15 days now 😐

Any ways it’s not Marine Drive…it’s taken at bandra..while approaching sea link 🙂

  2. I used to love the dictations, they were easy, short and completely scoring. Any other language test getting a 20 of 20 impossible but Dictation allowed it 🙂

  3. Hehe, I loved these tests, I know geeky me, but I did! 😀
We need the ‘old’ teaching mode to stay, totally, I think they are still around too, these tests et al, no?
Anyway, nice header! And what is with this new profile name, blog name and all? 😀 Full revamp huh? 😉

  4. Spelling tests were real fun to do and I always enjoyed doing them 😀 😀
Slangs or the so-called hep words are not just an epidemic but pandemic appears to be the more appropriate term 😉 😉
There are so many similar things in the education system that are meant to train us and form the building blocks of education. I don’t think those techniques or systems can be changed, and if they are then it is something not good 😥

    A very thought provoking post 😀 😀

  5. The dictation tests, making sentences for new words, underlining the new/difficult words and looking up their meanings in a dictionary is done still in schools…at least in lower classes!

  6. Read the last one in this post and you will know how crazy my dictation went once :

I agree, the usage of slangs has increased these days. Lots of shortcuts too; blame it on the sms and chats. For example, I find it weird when people use ‘5yn’ or ‘fyn’ instead of ‘fine’ ; I mean, the new word is just one letter short, how difficult is it to use that word as it is ! 😀 😀

  7. I remember when i would come back home for holidays from school my dad would ask me to pick up 10 words Every day and learn them and write them.. the spellings the meanings from a dictionary…

ALthough over the years I guess that has changed and slang has come over a lot , and the SMS thing has messed it all up.

But As you say old is gold I am glad some schools do give importance to spelling and writing of full words .. My english teacher Mr. Sidhu was very particular about it .. he when he gave us assignments to be done made sure that he gave us again a few words big hard words to be used in what we write..

a good post Liked it .. and who started this First thing ah well I dont know Cause I am never first anywhere .. by the time I come online everyone has been everywhere i am going to 🙂

I hope there are no spelling mistakes in this comment now 🙂

    1. LOL no no Bik there are no spelling mistakes in here 😉 and even if it’s there-no test is going on so you can relax 😉

Teachers like Mr.Siddhu make good students out of the kids 🙂

  8. I hated them..well because I was bad at them..and still am bad with spellings..

Loved the grammar part and long words and their meanings. That I am good at 😀 😀

And I can’t for the life of me write in short form (text language or whatever it is called).. I guess we are all old now 😐

  9. Its not just with the kids. I see people using slang even in office mail sometimes. Words are quickly disappearing. 🙂

Old is always better. Its time tested. New will always be new and faithfully forgotten in the future 🙂

  10. Do u know that in many schools in the US, they have started to accept exams written in SMS language! Can u believe it?
    Something like
    Lx&er d gr8 😛
what is this world coming to Nu?!

  11. I never read novels and story books like that!! I think there is no fun reading like that. I would ask my sister or understand by the context. Reading like that was limited only to textbooks.
Anyway I totally agree with your POV.
